Review: Final Coil EP (2015)

Stig rather liked this one…...

Leicestershire based stoner rockers Final Coil have had their progress hindered by a series of setbacks and line up changes but with this new EP having a bit of a re launch.

Final Coil is:

Phil Stiles – Lead Vocals / Guitar
Rich Awdry – Lead Guitar / Vocals
Tony ‘Ches’ Hughes – Drums
Jola Stiles – Bass / Design

Closed to the Light released at the end of 2015 and recorded at Yellow Bean in Leicester with their new drummer Tony “Chez Hughes” is considered to have a more mature sound, which has developed over the years and I can’t agree more. It’s an Ep with attitude of early Soundgarden Alice in Chains and Tool. They have taken their influences and ran with it, creating their own excellent sound and feel.

With a ghostly intro you begin to understand what is ahead. The EP then kicks straight into Daylight Fades, with its chunky beat and crunching guitar, very reminiscent of AIC’s Them Bones.

Goodbye to all That starts with a stunning sounding bass and its screaming guitar intro moving  into a brooding song with an immense guitar riffs that stir the soul and vocals that scream to your soul.

Closed to the Light with its mesmerising beat almost trance like and with the atmospheric vocals of Phil Stiles’s, akin to Layne Staley himself.  About the state of society and our place in it. Its another great song and keeps the mood flowing, with an influence Pink Floyd.

It’s difficult to pick out a standout track as they are all so good. This morning I convinced myself it was Closed to the Light, now as I am writing this I think its Goodbye to all that. Final Coil are definitely back and have produced brilliant EP
