BOC: THE REISSUES

Published:

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of their widely celebrated album ‘Agents of Fortune’,
Blue Öyster Cult performed the seminal album in its glorious entirety at an exclusive concert for the Audience Music Network on 18th April 2016 at Red Studios in Hollywood in front of an intimate audience of invited guests. The performance was recorded by a small army of cameramen for a TV special that is now being released on LP, CD/DVD and Blu-Ray by Frontiers Music.

The intense creative vision of BÖC’s original core duo of vocalist/lead guitarist Donald ‘Buck
Dharma’ Roeser and vocalist/rhythm guitarist Eric Bloom were complemented by Richie
Castellano on guitar and keyboards plus the longtime rhythm section comprised of bassist
Kasim Sulton and drummer Jules Radino. Founding member Albert Bouchard also appeared
as a special guest on guitar, percussion and vocals on selected tracks.

BÖC’s fourth album, ‘Agents Of Fortune’ was originally released in 1976 and went on to
achieve platinum status on the strength of songs such as ‘(Don’t Fear) The Reaper,’ the band’s biggest hit. Tinged with a more commercial sound that preserved the band’s heavy metal base while exploring new and varied musical forms, the album proved to be their breakthrough record. Nothing they had produced previously prepared listeners for its level of sophistication and it is not only now considered an essential document of the band, but an iconic 1970’s rock music release.

Frontiers are also reissuing BÖC’s thirteenth studio album, ‘Heaven Forbid’, for the world outside of the Americas. Released in March 1998, it was the group’s first full studio set containing original material since ‘Imaginos’ a decade earlier. Science fiction author John Shirley contributed heavily, writing lyrics for all except two of its new songs, while a live version of ‘In Thee’ (from 1979’s ‘Mirrors’) was also included. ‘Heaven Forbid’ is a classy slab of hard rock featuring intricate arrangements, provocative lyrics and spine-tingling guitar solos. The rockers sound in top form on this full blown (at the time) return album, which includes the menacing and thrashy opener, ‘See You in Black’, the sci-fi epic ‘X-Ray Eyes’ and the mythical and atmospheric ‘Harvest Moon’.

Currently hard at work on new material for a studio album that will be released in 2020, BÖC’s Eric Bloom recently stated that “the band is in the middle of creating new songs and recording them in between tour dates and, as they evolve in rehearsals and soundchecks, we hope to drop a song or two into our live shows soon. Everyone is involved in the writing and arrangement of the new material and we’re all excited about the prospect of a new BÖC album.”
BÖC will tour the UK in October 2020, including several shows with Deep Purple.
With a history spanning almost five decades, Blue Öyster Cult has a long history of success and have sold almost 25 million records worldwide. Songs like ‘Burnin’ for You’, ‘Godzilla’, ‘Astronomy’ and ‘(Don’t Fear) The Reaper’ are true classics and staples of the classic rock genre. Often cited as a major influence by some of the biggest names in hard rock and metal (including Iron Maiden and Metallica), the sound of Blue Öyster Cult has evolved through the decades, touching hard rock, heavy metal, progressive and psychedelic rock. They are often referred to as “the thinking man’s heavy metal band,” due to their often cryptic lyrics, literate songwriting, and links to famous authors.
