REVIEW: SONS OF LIBERTY- THE DETAIL IS IN THE DEVIL (2024)

Published:

When I saw Sons Of Liberty last Autumn, I wrote this: “It’s not that the Bristol mob are doing anything earth-shattering new; in fact, it is precisely because they are so authentic that they’re excellent. They have the air of blokes who, were they not on the stage, would be watching the gig with us.”

That was when they opened for FM, but honestly, everything about their latest record  “The Detail Is In The Devil,” evokes the same feeling.

Basically, it encapsulates everything there is to love about the Bristol-based rockers. From gritty hard rock to soulful blues influences, this album delivers way more than a yee-haw.

The opening track, “Time To Fly,” sets the tone with its good, honest hard rock sound, complete with a tough edge and impressive double kick drums. It’s a high-energy start that immediately grabs attention and showcases the band’s musical prowess.

“Light The Fuse” follows suit, blending southern tinged melodies with catchy hooks and a bass groove heavy enough to anchor ships. The track’s infectious energy is a testament to Sons of Liberty’s ability to craft songs that resonate.

“Turn This Tide” takes a more reflective turn, delving into themes of the modern world with a hint of country-fried flavour. Despite its introspective lyrics, the song maintains a driving rhythm that keeps momentum flowing.

As the album progresses, Sons of Liberty reveal their influences, with nods to bands like AC/DC and Thunder shining through. Tracks like “Tertulia Time” embody the spirit of a raucous party, inviting listeners to join in the fun.

Yet, Sons of Liberty prove they’re not limited to one style. “Walk With You” offers a bluesy respite, highlighted by soulful organ melodies that add depth to the band’s sound. Meanwhile, “What’s A Man Supposed To Do?” channels the boogie-infused spirit of Bad Company, showcasing the band’s versatility.

“Hawk Men Come” slows the tempo, creating an ominous atmosphere that captiivates. Throughout it all, Sons of Liberty maintain a sense of authenticity and passion that shines through.

The album’s standout moments come when the band fully embraces their love for rocking out. “Love What You Got” is a prime example, serving as an anthem to keeping it real with its infectious energy and classic rock vibes. Similarly, “Libertine” channels the essence of rock ‘n’ roll with a blistering guitar solo that harkens back to the genre’s golden era.

What truly sets Sons of Liberty apart is their unpretentious approach to music-making. Whether delivering a heartfelt love song like “I Got The Sky” or a stomping rocker like “Well’s Run Dry,” the band’s absolute unshakeable belief is clear.

“The Detail Is In The Devil” is a testament to Sons of Liberty’s talent, yes, but also the dedication to their craft – and with it, Sons of Liberty have delivered the only record they could, and this is all the better for it.
