REVIEW: INDIGO BONES EP

Published:

Hedonistic garage rock from Hull

Somewhere along the way, don’t you think, we forgot that rock n roll should be fun? Even a band starting out these days seems to be more Twitter Followers and Facebook likes than actually enjoying honing their craft.

MV was musing on this while listening to the second song on the brilliant debut four tracker from Indigo Bones. Beating with a dark heart (any song that begins “I’ve tried to figure this out/got a ghost for a mother and a penny in my mouth” isn’t gonna be doing too many children’s parties) “Delicate” is a phenomenal song, both light and heavy, it packs more punch than in its three and a half minutes than many bands do in a career and you know what? You almost know that guitarist Chris Welburn, drummer Marty Hoyle, and bassist and vocalist Mark Swan enjoyed themselves while making it.

The trio had worked together on previous projects, if they had written a song as good as “Vertical Sleep” in those, then we’d like to hear it. Locking themselves into a 60’s type groove isn’t a bad way to announce themselves, really and the clever lyrical interplay is to the fore here too.

“Silver Nosebleeds” is choc-full of fuzzy, garage rock goodness. Echoing everyone from Jack White to Royal Blood to The Doors, but not really ones sounding like anyone, they even manage a turbocharged boogie in “Elastic Patient” to close things.

Look, it’s their debut and its only four tracks long, so you hesitate to suggest how good Indigo Bones could eventually be and also how far they’ll go. What we can say beyond doubt is that this is very, very good indeed.

One of the lines here reckons they are building up a team for the end of the world. If that’s the case MV will sign up just in case.
