On 16th July Demon Records release two Black Francis albums which have never been available on vinyl before.
Both are lovingly issued on 140g coloured vinyl: Bluefinger will be available on marbled blue vinyl, and Live At The Hotel Utah Saloon as 2LPs on red vinyl.
After 15 years of releasing music under the Frank Black pseudonym, Black Francis returned in 2007 with the new album Bluefinger.
Whilst recording the album, Black was “gripped by the spirit of Herman Brood” – the fabled Dutch musician and artist. The result is a collection of 11 loud and rowdy songs inspired by Brood including the single ‘Threshold Apprehension‘.
“Bluefinger is a blast of music recorded with a rhythm section that I added libretto and other emotional flourishes to with the aid of my producer, blues man Mark Lemhouse; all this devoted to the life and times and death of Herman Brood, a Dutch rock and roller, painter, and all around hedonist by most accounts, beloved of the Dutch nation as a kind of Frank Sinatra or Keith Richards type icon, flawed, noble, unapologetic. In fact, the Dutch call their own ‘cuddle junkie’
What can I say? I bought into the cult of Herman to the degree that I often suspected assistance from the artist himself, all somehow channeled to me from across the great divide. I still run into his world every time I am within 500 miles of Zwolle, Nederlands, home of all blaufinkels” – Black Francis.
While Black Francis’ Live At The Hotel Utah Saloon, recorded on 19 October 2007 , includes solo renditions of ‘Headache‘, ‘I Heard Ramona Sing‘, ‘All My Ghosts‘ and ‘Wave Of Mutilation‘.
Black Francis explains:
“Hotel Utah was this bar with some rooms above there in San Francisco. It had an alcoholic charm which melded quite well with my own consumption of heavy, dark Chateau-Neuf du Pape that I was fond of at the time. I do recall on the evening recorded here that I cleaned up a greasy, black and cheap guitar that someone had given me. It took about one half bottle of the stuff and a rag to dress the guitar for the party. And there was a bottle and a half, and a nice clean bar glass for me and ya know, we both cleaned up pretty good.
Wrote most of Non-Stop Erotik on that trip in the back of my Cadillac while my designated driver, Todd Demma, got me to the next California mystery stop, ’cause that what they all are, mystery stops; full of mysterious people and ghosts and old roads and new roads and the constant dust of construction and the myth of progress. California is chock full of this and of little drinking dens to consider all that there is to consider.“
These two releases are part of an ongoing series of twelve vinyl Frank Black / Black Francis reissues in 2021.
