REVIEW:MATT FINUCANE – BANG BANG EXORCISM EP (2024)

Published:

Matt Finucane is a British musician known for his distinctive style that blends elements of post-punk, grunge, and art-rock. He has released several albums and EPs showcasing his unique and experimental approach and has built a dedicated following within the alternative music community for his thought-provoking lyrics and edgy sound.

He releases his latest EP `Bang Bang Exorcism` which came about when Matt and drummer Barney Guy realised they both liked trance music in the car on long drives to gigs… So why not capture the feel and tone of it, but in a primal rock format? And why not go deep, and make it an actual exorcism? Themes of isolation, mental disturbance, and the ghosts and shadows of the past vented in psychodrama and big feedback and weirdness: it’s absolutely unholy, and nothing more is needed.

Opening track `Run With the Freaks` has a bit of a reggae vibe with a simple message i read that “it’s more fun to run with the freaks: the outsiders, the aliens, the mutants… The song celebrates that unique atmosphere of maladjustment and mad joy they create.” An unassuming number that really draws you in as it builds up in speed and intensity as if you are starting to run with the dying seconds reduced to a kind of mayhem. A pulsing drumbeat and resonating guitar riffs lead us through a shadowy journey on `Dear Darkness`.

`Witchcraft Mind` has an almost goth like `Bela Lugosi`s Dead` resonance while `Dark Hills` is a rhythmic rolling number with lyrics that portray a quite odd shadowy landscape.

`The Jazzmaster` has a sort of retro hypnotic timbre with lyrics bellowed throughout before reverting to asking or revealing as to who or whom is the Jazzmaster in the last sixty seconds. The bizarrely titled `A Piece of Dad’s Old Hearth` flits through a variety of musical styles as it evolves and seems to revolve around a fragment of an old fireplace. Strange but wonderfully compelling.

`Bang Bang Exorcism` is full of enticing quirky melodies with lyrics that are fairly surreal but really sync with the musical accompaniment. If you`ve twenty-five minutes to spare, it`s well worth a blast!!!
