Way back in the dim and distant past, a a boke at my work handed me a CDR (kids, ask your parents) of Within Temptation’s second album, saying, “I think you’ll like it.” Little did we know that this Dutch symphonic metal band, led by the enchanting Sharon den Adel, would continue to evolve over the years. With the release of their eighth album, “Bleed Out,” Within Temptation proves that they are not content with being classic rock; they remain remarkably modern and relevant.
Since the start of the war in Ukraine, Within Temptation has turned their focus towards addressing global issues. “Bleed Out” delves into subjects such as the war in Ukraine, the plight of women fighting for freedom in Iran, and the complexities surrounding a woman’s right to choose. While their lyrical themes have evolved, they haven’t lost their touch for creating stunningly powerful tracks.
“We Go To War” kicks off the album with epic, Euro-style keyboards and a massive chorus. It’s a perfect example of Within Temptation’s knack for crafting anthemic tracks. “Bleed Out,” on the other hand, showcases the band’s ability to sound massive, with powerful hooks and a heroically heavy atmosphere.
“Wireless” is a showcase for Sharon den Adel’s astonishing vocal talent, and it’s a testament to modern metal done right. The classical elements in “Worth Dying For” add a unique dimension to the album, and it works brilliantly.
“Ritual” is a complex and compelling track, with den Adel’s vocals rivaling the sensuality of Lzzy Hale. “Cyanide Love” combines delicate tinkling with a vicious beatdown, creating a dynamic contrast. “The Purge” follows suit and is exceptionally well-crafted, with keyboards playing a significant role in its composition.
“Don’t Pray for Me” slows down the tempo but maintains the grandiosity that characterizes the entire album. Within Temptation has no interest in the “less is more” philosophy, and “Bleed Out” exemplifies their maximalist approach.
“Shed My Skin” features Annisokay, and their collaboration works wonderfully. The duet adds depth to the album, and the result is a perfect fusion of their styles. “Unbroken” is aptly titled, a defiant statement that adds an edge to the album.
“Entertain You” may evoke thoughts of Nirvana with its title, but this is 2023, and Within Temptation seamlessly blends a variety of styles throughout the album. The track is a prime example of modern metal done right, and this consistency carries throughout the entire record.
It’s remarkable that a band as far into their career as Within Temptation can still sound this fresh and energized. “Bleed Out” is an album that gushes with creativity, captivating lyrics, and powerful musical arrangements. Within Temptation continues to push boundaries – they could have rested on their laurels. They could. They just didn’t want to.
“Bleed Out” gushes with ideas.
