REVIEW: WILL WILDE – THE BLUES IS STILL ALIVE (2025)

Published:

“When it comes to playing harp now, I am the finest on the scene. When it comes to making love, I am the best there’s ever been.”

So sings Will Wilde on “Wild Man” (no E this time), and while I can’t vouch for the latter—thankfully—I can say with confidence that the first claim might just be true.

Anyone who saw Wilde perform alongside Walter Trout last year already knows how sensational he is. The blues-rock legend himself returns the favour on this album, delivering a fantastic solo on the title track.

From start to finish, The Blues Are Still Alive showcases Wilde’s exceptional harmonica work. “Don’t Play With Fire” is a standout, its fiery energy contrasting beautifully with the jazz-like strains of “Gypsy Woman,” a track that lurks in the darkness and allows Wilde’s playing to shine. The slower numbers, like “Stole My Love,” further highlight his expressive approach to the blues.

On the flip side, Wilde sounds like he’s having an absolute blast on tracks like “Trouble Of That Girl,” making it impossible not to conclude that this is simply a sensational blues record—nothing more, nothing less. “Girl’s Got Soul” stomps through a classic 12-bar groove built for a party, while “Learn How To Love” adds a soulful depth with rich harmonies.

Of course, the blues is all about feeling, and The Blues Are Still Alive captures that essence perfectly. “Broken Dream Blues” embodies the genre’s raw emotion, while “Don’t Trust Me” closes things out on a playful note, reminiscent of Thin Lizzy’s “Don’t Believe A Word.”

As Kid Rock (or Bob Ritchie, to his mates) once said, “It ain’t bragging if you can back it up.” There might’ve been a few swear words in there, but the point stands: Wilde’s claim of being the best harp player around? Bang on.

As for the other claim? I’ll leave that to the Wilde man.
