Tomorrow`s Tigers is the brainchild of singer-songwriter and musician Chris Punsalan who releases his latest self-titled EP this month. Chris was previously part of San Fernando Valley metal band Low Octane and Brooklyn indie-pop rock band The iOs.
This four-track extended play opens with `All the Noise` which has a kind of retro vibe with synths, guitar riffs and backing harmonies accompanying the lead vocal. The vocals had an air of familiarity about them which I couldn`t quite place. I must admit that I played this track a fair few times before moving on which is always a good sign. We have in `Odeon` a number about time spent working at the Cineplex Odeon movie theater, where the manager would let the staff enjoy after hours screenings with alcohol. It`s a delightful reminiscence of times gone by with synthesiser melodies and put me in mind of New Order`s `Age Of Consent` from forty years ago.
`The Dweller` is wonderfully meditative and becomes fairly mesmerising as it evolves and really sucks you in. Although it was ballad like, it felt like an introspective lament for something long gone. The use of clarinet and a rapid rhythmic drumbeat at times throughout, along with the yearning piano tones intensified the piece and added a further sense of poignancy to this composition. This release closes with `Year Zero` which usually signifies the beginning of revolutionary change but here I have to say it`s a gentle dreamlike instrumental with quietly shared flute or clarinet.
There was much to enjoy on Tomorrow`s Tigers EP and for me, this four-track taster left me wanting much, much more.
