REVIEW : THEN COMES SILENCE – BOXED EP (2025)

Published:

Then Comes Silence are a Swedish gothic rock and post punk band, formed in 2012, Their music draws inspiration from horror and spiritism. The current line up of the band is Alex Svenson Metés (bass, lead vocals, keyboards), Jonas Fransson (drums, backing vocals) and Hugo Zombie (guitars).

‘Boxed’ is a seven song digital EP reissue consisting of two songs in Spanish, two instrumentals, two remixes and one outtake from their 2022 album, ‘Hunger’, the tracks were originally included as part of a sold-out box set version of that release. Mattias Ruejas Jonson adds guitars and backing vocals on this release.

This extended play opens with `Spökenas Intäg (Walk-In)` which may translate to certificates of ghosts and is an eerie spectral almost cinematic instrumental that would be ideal as a soundtrack to a horror film or some macabre chiller. In `We Only Have So Long (Outtake)` we enjoy a reflective synth guitar driven lighter reflection on what may possibly be a romantic encounter or a reflection on mortality.

`Dias y Años (Spanish Version)` is a rendering of `Days and Years` but sung in Spanish. A track that seemed to hint at or predict something dangerous or destructive on the horizon. A fairly enticing mid paced synth tinged rock out. Again we have another song `Cebo (Spanish Version)` a reworking in Spanish of the track `Worm`. A fairly pounding thumping rhythmic number which may reflect on the representation that worms symbolise the cycle of life, death, and rebirth.

`Blood Runs Cold (H Zombie Remix)` is a pulsing remix of the original track that appeared to imply a sense of fear and terror. There`s an edgy dreaminess to `WLTN Unboxing (Instrumental Version)`

This seven track extended play closes out with `Skuggornas Intäg (Walk-In)` which could be Certificate of the Shadows. A number that feels quite dark, wraithlike, or vague.

The `Boxed EP` is an interesting listen but seems as if it`s a release with fans in mind as opposed to trying to gain a new audience. A worthwhile addition and maybe something to sate fans interests as they await new material.
