Aaron Mclaughlin (vocals and bass), Ben Warrington (guitar and backing vocals) and John Simmons-Powell (drums) make up the garage, desert, and punk trio The Tall trees who hail from the West Yorkshire market town of Halifax. They originally formed in 2014 and resurrected in 2020 after a few years hiatus. They released their debut album ‘Takes One To Know One’ in 2022 and are about to release their new EP ‘Nervous Energy` this month.
This three track extended play kicks off with title track `Nervous Energy` and it`s a heavy blustery grungy grinding rock out with vocals that veer from panicky and worried to an angrier state as it evolves, and frustration appears to boil over. A diatribe on a relationship that`s headed south maybe. There`s much more of a stoner vibe to `If I Didn`t Laugh` which has a kind of anguished pleading in the vocal delivery. A track that confirms that the narrator is floundering and can`t be the one to turn to for support as they`re struggling themselves.
We close out on `Forget It` which is an engrossing slow burn nigh on doom laden offering initially before taking off briefly with a screaming invective before slowing again. Just when you start to relax it races off again with cries for help before fading out with manic laughter. Phew.
There was a lot to enjoy with this latest submission from The Tall Trees which gave a flavour of the meld of manic sound they create in under ten minutes. It`s full of big riffs and thumping drums which gives it that big sound.
If you remember and liked bands like Zodiac Mindwarp and the Love Reaction, you`ll love The Tall Trees, check `em out.
