The Nervous Eaters are a rock and roll band from Boston, Massachusetts who helped define the Boston underground garage/punk rock scene of the late seventies. The band was formed by Steve Cataldo on the North Shore of Boston in Beverly. Their latest album `Rock n Roll Your Heart Away` is released this month.
The album opens with title track `Rock n Roll Your Heart Away` written by founding member and front man Steve Cataldo as his heartfelt tribute to the legendary Boston club ‘The Rat’, its owner Jimmy Harold, and the vital musical world that was once centered around the Kenmore Square section of the city. It`s a melodic mid paced number with tinkling piano keys and a brief guitar solo that will have you singing the strapline before the number has ended. A shaking tambourine leads us into `Vampire` which has a fairly enticing retro vibe.
`Don’t Need to Make You Mine` is sprinkled with jangly guitar riffs and has a slight Byrds vibe where `Just for You` has a similar feel but is much faster paced.
`Inside Out` felt as though it could have come straight out of the late seventies, whereas there was a kind of deep reflection in `New Face` which has some superb organ tones which gave it a delightful soulful texture.
`Girl Next Door` has a simplicity about it but really draws you into its rhythmic touch. I felt that `Scream` was the rockiest number on the album which had shades of punk and even a fairly heavy metal guitar solo on route.
`Sharlene` had an r&b Stones come Alice Cooper sense and swagger about it. The album closes out with `In The Shadows` not quite a ballad but a wonderfully slow burn reflective listen and a number that i`m sure when played live will have the venue filled with lit phones and lighters.
`Rock n Roll Your Heart Away` was created by many seasoned musicians who included Steve Cataldo (lead vocals, lead guitars, keyboards, percussion), Carissa Johnson (bass, vocals, percussion), Adam Sherman (guitars, vocals), David McLean (drums, percussion) and Jim Sullivan (piano, organ), with additional musicians Brooks Milgate (piano, organ), Jack Gauthier (vocals) and Lou Cataldo (vocals).
There was so much to enjoy on `Rock n Roll Your Heart Away` and you`d have to be made of stone not to end up nodding your head, tapping your foot, or singing along with some of the catchy choruses shared through out this entrancing nigh on forty minutes of melodic rock.
