REVIEW: THE FERRYMEN – IRON WILL (2025)

Published:

Power metal supergroup The Ferrymen returns with their fourth album, Iron Will, delivering another dose of epic, cinematic metal. Formed under the guidance of Frontiers Music, the band unites Swedish guitarist and producer Magnus Karlsson (Primal Fear, Magnus Karlsson’s Free Fall), powerhouse vocalist Ronnie Romero (Lords of Black, Sunstorm, Rainbow), and seasoned drummer Mike Terrana (Rage, Axel Rudi Pell). With a lineup like this, expectations are high—and Iron Will does not disappoint.

From the opening moments, the album establishes itself as a larger-than-life affair. Tracks like “Mother Unholy” and the title track embrace the band’s signature grandiosity, proving that The Ferrymen have no interest in holding back. Karlsson’s guitar work is razor-sharp, delivering riffs that are both intricate and anthemic. “Darkest Storm” boasts an opening riff that many guitarists would envy, while the solos throughout the record are nothing short of electrifying.

Despite the band’s preference for bombastic compositions, they still manage to explore different textures. “Adrenaline” injects groove into the mix, while “Dreams and Destiny”—a ballad with folk influences—offers a rare, more subdued moment. Romero’s versatile vocals shine throughout, proving his ability to shift between soaring highs and emotive lows effortlessly.

Of course, Iron Will is at its best when embracing its over-the-top nature. “Dust to Dust” perfectly captures the album’s essence: dramatic, expertly played, and polished to perfection. The eerie harmonies on “The Darkness That Divides” add an extra layer of depth, while “Mind Games” unleashes a furious twin-guitar assault. The album closes with “You’re The Joker,” a final, fist-pumping anthem that ensures Iron Will ends on a high note.

At this stage in their career, The Ferrymen know exactly what their audience expects, and Iron Will delivers it in spades. It’s a masterclass in modern power metal, filled with soaring melodies, crushing riffs, and top-tier musicianship.
