REVIEW: THE DOOZERS – BECOMING AN ENTITY (2024)

Published:

The Doozers are a high energy indie/new wave band hailing from the suburbs of Rochester, Michigan consisting of four members: Sean Donnelly (vocals, guitar), Parker Grissom (guitar), Melanie Kelley (bass), and Kyle Garland (drums). They release their debut album `Becoming An Entity` this month which incorporates multiple moves, college graduations, beginnings and ends of teaching careers, a global pandemic, the genesis and conclusion of long-term romantic relationships, the departure of founding member, Charlie Belleville, from the group, and the subsequent addition of long-time friend Parker Grissom, the album traces all the ebbs and flows of the social and emotional landscape of the band.

`World 1 – Gopher Bop` leads us in and it’s a quirky swaying stop start pop tinged number with complementing vocals that not only trade off each other but also delightfully harmonise. There`s a similar feel to `Make It Tessellate`.

`Ah Shellenté` is a much gentler almost dreamy composition, which kind of veers off instrumentally in the last minute. I read that `5-3` is a song that is a declaration of confidence, a reassurance of spring through the final moments of winter. Another tender piece that does feel like an awakening or re-emergence of sorts.

`Start me Up, my Friend` is a thoughtful track that races along and gives the impression of an optimistic view of life, as if one has just emerged from hibernation with the world at your feet. The last minute or so again swerves off in an instrumental soundscape. Seemingly, ‘Tidal Song’ is focused on the release of binds that keep us separate. A fairly mesmerising listen with warm vocals that have a kind of vulnerability about them.

`What`s Mine` has an understated bass line and rhythmic drum guiding us along. An abstracted introspective musing. There’s a fairly funky vibe to `Moontic` which really draws you in, not quite a disco number but certainly heading there.

`:0 <3` is fairy abstract seventy-five seconds of soundbites all melded together. We enjoy another soulful offering with `I Think Its Time` which has a breathy, illusory absorbing texture.

`Filter Feed` was I read, born of an impatient frustration and is a number that has a fitful sporadic opening before evening out. A rapid drum and bass texture pervades the first minute of `Milk:: Time` with a what may be Spanish spoken word oration before it flattens out and becomes an easy going pop tinged tranquil arrangement.

`Keeping Form, Coming Loose` has an ethereal almost dreamlike sensibility and leads you off into a world of your own before `Authority` closes out the album. A fairly enthralling instrumental that had a kind of cinematic structure.

`Becoming An Entity` is a fairly enigmatic listen full of melodic sequences and vocal interplay with emotive soothing sections and more illusory dreamlike channels. It`s a release that demands attention and i`m sure will disclose more levels, each time you return to listen.
