Review: Spunk Volcano and the Eruptions – Not Wired up Right (2017)

Steve comes again with a brand new one

As the band name suggests the 3rd album by Spunk Volcano, guitarist and prolific song writer from punk legends “Dirt Box Disco” is not for the faint hearted. The star studded Eruptions also features special guest “Ginger Wildheart” adding some guitar and backing vocals.

At just over a minute, opener ‘Not Wired up Right’ sets the tone for the album.  With metal guitar this tight song shows their influences, especially Motorhead and GBH. Next up ‘Nobhead’ shows the influence SV has on the DBD repertoire.

The playing is excellent and SV has assembled some talented musicians. The melodic bass makes the songs bounce along.  Shutdown has an amazing opening guitar riff reminiscent of early UK Subs.

The choruses are catchy such as ‘Out of the Blue’ and ‘Dementia Hurricane’ and SV sings about his life experiences. ‘Gatecrash’ is something that we can all relate to (especially the carrier bags full of cans).

‘Fuck this for a game of soldiers’ has a sinister start akin to the Dead Kennedys. This is a great singalong with an awesome guitar sound and a wicked guitar solo. Despite it’s title it’s story isn’t what you would expect.

These are the songs of an angry man who wears his influences on his sleeve. ‘You’re the Bastard’ is a song Lemmy would be proud of with some great guitar and drum fills. At just over a minute it really ends too early.

‘Smack in the Teeth’ is a tell it like it is tune complemented by excellent playing. ‘Knuckledusters and Scars’ continues this theme sounding like a cross between Rancid, the Ramones and Killing Joke.

In contrast, ‘Purely Medicinal’ is a clever departure, a great drinking song that will have the Rebellion Festival faithful singing along to this man and his guitar.
