REVIEW: REVENANT – BLACK DOGS AND SAD MEN (2025)

Published:

For a band that only formed a couple of years ago, Berkshire mob Revenant have been pretty busy.

They’re back with another five-tracker, produced by Dave Draper (The Wildhearts, Terrorvision), which further underlines why people have been so excited about them.

“Lie Your Living” is at once riff-heavy, energetic, and angry – “this ends today” sings Sam Lay, and he seems to mean it. The solo, though, gives away the ambition of this band.

Quite simply, Revenant want it. And they want it now. And they’ve got the songs to make it happen.

“Black Dogs And Sad Men” might be an exploration into some dark places, but it beats – like all their songs – with an arena rock heart.

“I’ll Be There” slows the pace and adds some blues – and if one thing has become clear over the years, it’s that these boys can write a hook.

“Sex With No Substance” adds – exactly as you’d expect – an air of sleaze, and you’d imagine it’s made for playing live.

There’s a greater air of reflection about the ballad “All You Need” and its acoustic fragility.

It offers “it’s time for us to leave,” yet on “Black Dogs And Sad Men,” Revenant sound like they’re only just getting started.
