There are some records you know you’re going to review within seconds of hearing them — and as soon as the boogie of “Public Service Announcement” ushers itself in, it’s clear this is going to be one of those.
There is, quite simply, nothing not to like here.
It’s not that this is original; it’s more that the title track doesn’t give a monkey’s that you’ve heard this before — it’s too busy having fun to care one jot.
Formed only a couple of years ago, Revenant have already done plenty. Praised by Classic Rock and more, they’re full of class.
“Runaway Rage” would, if it were Black Stone Cherry, see thousands of fists in the air in an arena near you — and it’s abundantly clear that Matt Hudson is relishing being the guitar player.
New single “Least I Can Do” is an absolute beauty. A southern-fried ballad written by Hudson when he found out he was going to be a father, it amounts to a letter to his daughters — and musically, it opens the door to far more tenderness and texture than you’d imagine.
That’s the key to the last one, too. The acoustic “Miss You” is warm, welcoming, and wonderfully reflective. Whoever it’s about meant a lot to them — and it shows.
It also shows how much this band means to all involved. This is a collection of songs that’s been played live for a year, but which has now seen Dave Draper (The Wildhearts et al) sprinkle his magic over.
“Best Medicine” is not only a cure for what ails you — it’s an EP that hints Revenant could be pretty special in a year or two.
