When MV pushes to its outer limits, you can bet Damian is reviewing it

R,Missing is the electronic, synth driven side project of New York duo composing vocalist Sharon Shy and multi-instrumentalist Toppy. They by day are the highly rated indie rock duo The Ropes who formed in 2005.

A six track EP `Unsummering` has just been released, with very little publicity or hype.

Title track `Unsummering` kicks us off with an electronic back beat and Sharon’s not quite but near detached vocals layered on top.

`Kelly Was A Philistine` is a more up tempo number with a hypnotic backbeat and vocals almost reluctantly shared. Swirling synths and mesmerising lyrics including “She’s not ready” really get under your skin.

A sort of hard line thumping beat opens `Deeper Holes` before the soft vocals join and compliment the background as swirling waves of synth riffs wash over. A really well put together track.

`Birthright` has a pulse running through the piece which allowed the vocals to be shared almost dispassionately over the top. A crackling noise like a scratch on a vinyl record floats in and out.

The penultimate tune `Mostly Black` has a sort of trippy ambience about it with Shy’s breathy vocals wonderfully bled over the musical foundation.

The EP closes out with `Mouser` which has again vocals that are almost isolated from the Electronic drum and synth beats. The song has a menacing feel about it and certainly grabs your attention.

This was a really interesting release. It had a lot of aspects about it, at times it was dispassionate, aloof, distant but extremely enjoyable and some tracks were very danceable.

It would fall into the category of all the best ambient, new wave experimental, electro pop and dance rock that is around today. I found the music to be very captivating and compelling and it’s heartening to hear a band try something a little out of their comfort zone.

A splendid introduction.
