REVIEW: PERFECT PLAN  – HEART OF A LION (2025)

Published:

There was a Bon Jovi tour video once (kids, ask your parents—these things were all the rage before the internet ruined everything) where Jon Bon Jovi declared that he was “so far out of fashion, he’d always be in fashion.” There’s a bit of that about melodic rock, isn’t there?

Enter Perfect Plan. Led by powerhouse vocalist Kent Hilli, this band delivers AOR in its purest, most timeless form. You know exactly what you’re getting—somewhere between Magnum and Survivor, and executed with near perfection.

From the soaring solo on the title track to the bombastic energy of “We Are Heroes,” Heart of a Lion is the kind of record that feels like an instant classic. Yes, you’ve heard this style before—but so what? When it’s done this well, that’s precisely the appeal. “All Night” is a prime example, a track that soars effortlessly, with a chorus that dares you to resist singing along.

Then there’s “Turn On Your Radio,” a track that encapsulates what Perfect Plan is all about—a love for this music that radiates from every note. AOR albums live and die by their ballads, and “My Unsung Hero” delivers, overflowing with the positivity and emotion that define the genre. “Ready to Break” chugs along with the best of them, driven by a brilliant performance from lead guitarist Rolf Nordström, who deserves special mention for his exceptional work throughout.

Meanwhile, keyboardist Leif Elhin takes the spotlight on “Too Tough,” proving once again that keys are the lifeblood of AOR. And as for Hilli? His talent has already turned heads—his work with Giant is proof enough—but give him one more song like “Lady Mysterious,” and Whitesnake might just come calling.

The whole album gleams with a polished, arena-ready sheen. “One Touch” is a fists-in-the-air anthem, while “Danger on the Loose” grooves with swagger and attitude. And when “At Your Stone” finally rolls around, it’s clear this track will absolutely shine in a live setting.

AOR is an easy genre to criticise, but that misses the point. Sometimes, you just need something familiar yet fresh, comforting yet electrifying. Brilliantly played and exquisitely executed, Heart of a Lion is damn near perfect.
