REVIEW: MOTHER`S CAKE – ULTRABLISS (2024)

Published:

`Ultrabliss` is Austrian psychedelic space rock band Mother’s Cake’s fifth album and arrives four years on from their last release `Cyberfunk!`.

The album comes to life with the epic `Clockwork` which runs to just under ten minutes and tips it`s hat to Stanley Kubrick’s cult film A Clockwork Orange. Organ hues lead us in before we head on a fairly trippy cosmic instrumental voyage. There`s more of a rolling indie vibe to `Feel Alright` which fairly races along with squeals of joy scattered throughout.

`One Of These Days` is a fairly dreamy nigh on psychedelic offering which becomes pretty hypnotic as it evolves. We enjoy another lengthy offering with `Love Me` which has a mesmeric captivating appeal with vocals that at time plead for adoration and affection. It almost grinds to a halt midway before resuming it`s hallucinogenic and vibrant trek.

`Serotonin` appears to be named after the chemical that carries messages between nerve cells in the brain and throughout your body where many people get that feeling of euphoria and this number kind of mirrors that sense of elation. There`s a nigh on a laid back or lethargic feel to `Clementines` with vocals that seem a lot heavier and deeper than previously shared.

`Poor Boy` has a delightful bass led pounding, thumping bluesy touch, not aggressive as such but forceful and dynamic. I thought `On A Trip` was more or less what the titled suggested, a trippy `get your rocks off` submission.

The album closes out with `Into The Light` which for me was the equivalent of a musical form of illumination. It begins quite gently with some intricate guitar chord riffs and tender vocals and is fairly reflective until the halfway point. It then starts to build momentum and has a heavier touch and atmosphere which leads us along and out of this piece.

There was so much to enjoy on `Ultrabliss` which if you allow it will take you off on a variety of ecstatic trips, treks, and journeys both on this planet and also intergalactic.

Taking a leaf from that sixties pysch period, I’d suggest with `Ultrabliss` you turn on, tune in and drop out.
