REVIEW: MARCUS TRUMMER – FROM THE START (2024)

Published:

On the pre-chorus of “Not The Same”, one of the final tracks on his debut album From The Start, Marcus Trummer delivers the poignant line: “We get so used to what we know.” It’s a simple observation, yet it captures a universal truth—and in many ways, it encapsulates the spirit of this record.

Frankly, if you’d told me I’d be reviewing a largely soul-driven album, I might have hesitated. But Marcus Trummer bucks the trend, offering a debut that immediately grabs hold. From the opening moments of From The Start, it’s clear this record has something. Whether it’s the glorious combination of organ and horns on “Holding Out For You” or the understated elegance of “I Won’t Let You Down”, this album exudes quality at every turn.

Though soul is at its core, there are delightful flourishes of blues throughout. The opening track sets the tone, and those bluesy influences resurface in the guitar work on “Hard Time”. But what truly elevates the album is Trummer himself. At just 23, the young Canadian possesses a voice that is rich, emotive, and, dare I say, timeless.

Take “Waiting For Change”, for instance. This track looks at the state of the world in 2024 with a critical eye, but it does so in a way that feels utterly classic. It’s a testament to Trummer’s songwriting and delivery that these songs feel like they could have been released at any point in history. The same can be said for the standout “The Only Thing”, a song so effortlessly universal that it defies the constraints of any single era.

The title track, “From The Start”, is another highlight—a tender and beautifully crafted piece that exemplifies the album’s overarching appeal. Even songs that might fall outside my usual preferences, like “Break My Fall”, manage to captivate with their subtle charm. Tracks like “Ready To Go” have a dreamy quality, floating gracefully through the listener’s consciousness.

The album concludes with “Let The Devil Win”, a fascinating closer that hints at future directions Trummer might explore. There’s a distinct Commoners vibe to the track, perhaps owing to the involvement of Ross Hayes Citrullo, who co-produced the album and also serves as lead guitarist for those Canadian heroes.

What’s most exciting about From The Start is the sense that this is only the beginning for Marcus Trummer. At just 23—and with his brother Silas, a talented drummer, only 19—there’s an abundance of potential here. With its soulful core, bluesy embellishments, and timeless quality, this debut marks the arrival of an artist with much more to offer.
