REVIEW: HEFF VANSAINT – BEST DAYS GONE EP (2024)

Published:

Heff VanSaint is an Aberdeen-born, London-based singer-songwriter who releases her latest EP `Best Days Gone` which follows on from her 2023 debut EP `Odes Of Hope For Sad Bois`.

Of the tracks on this EP, the singer has shared that ‘Heart On Trial’ and ‘Weavers Fields’ are a bittersweet look back on what’s been and gone, and what is ultimately lost and can never be regained, while ‘Pathways’ provides the alchemy of looking to the future and remembering that everything changes, good and bad; that nothing is permanent.

We are introduced to this extended play via ‘Weavers Fields’ whose inspiration is “about witnessing seismic changes to the area that you grew up in through gentrification and an influx of new people, and that feeling of being left behind while the world around you transforms and moves on.”. It`s fairly stripped back initially and has a delightfully reflective introspection about it. A wistful guitar adds a kind of shimmer to the number. There`s a faster pace to ‘Heart On Trial’ which reminisces on a lost love that still haunts the narrator to this day, as nobody else has ever come close to stirring such passion and emotion. The addition of a haunting saxophone adds a further poignancy to this offering.

This extended play concludes with `Pathways` which is again a thoughtful but almost detached contemplative view possibly on a relationship where each participant wants something else. But it hints that maybe they`ll eventually end up together.

The songs on `Best Days Gone` are wonderfully contemplative and are shared with vocals that have at times a haunting and breathless quality. This is a delightful taster of what Heff VanSaint has to offer and leaves you wanting so much more.
