Tom Haywood (Vocals), Gary White (Guitars), Nathan Dillon (Bass Guitar) and Wes Cunningham (Drums) the quartet who make up the Liverpool based alternative rock group Detroit Run have recently graced the stage at Planet Rock’s Winter’s End festival and now release their latest EP `Defiance Part 1` this month.
This five track offering opens with `Invincible` and although the title would lead you to believe that the narrator was unshakable, the vocals tend to portray a sense of uneasiness or anxiety and that by maybe expressing a reaffirmation of being indestructible maybe they will feel and believe it. The song itself is fairly thoughtful and has a sense of the anthemic with a reaffirmation that you have to at least believe in yourself despite others who may doubt you. We have a fast paced and delightfully expansive number in `Sleepwalker` which relates to having a relationship where you only meet at the weekend but want more.
`Tightrope` is another sprawling submission that hints at struggles with mental health issues and the balance or tightrope of wrestling and battling through those difficulties. We have in `Prototype` a hint at the possible dangers of the rise of AI and conceivable outcomes. A composition that has some pulsing electronic and synth tones while retaining a rock like sensibility.
This extended play closes with `Chained Heart` and it`s a melodic meditative, contemplative slow burn which depicts the dilemma of a relationship where you feel maybe it`s time to move on but worry about making that change.
There was much to enjoy on Detroit Run`s `Defiance Part` EP which gave a varied flavour of what this up and coming home grown rock quartet have to offer. There have an ability for creating some really melodic earworms with lyrical content that will make you maybe step back for a minute and consider what was shared.
I imagine `Defiance Part 2` will be next or maybe the band are working towards an album. Nevertheless there`s a bright future for this outfit and I for one look forward to seeing and hearing what develops.
