If I hadn`t read the blurb I must admit I’d have assumed that Dead Nice were from California rather than the largest town in the UK`s East Midlands, Leicester.
This quintet who are made up of seasoned musicians from numerous bands come together to release a three-track extended play this month. The band have shared that the concept for the EP with “It’s a super unique way of writing and recording and a way we hadn’t really worked before. We took it one further and actually came up with the loose concept of an island that gets cut off by the sea at night, and three different characters. ‘Observer’ is about someone looking on at what’s going on, ‘Outsider’ is about someone escaping, and ‘Occupier’ is about someone staying and tearing it up when the sun goes down.”
This three tracker runs at just under ten minutes and I have to say is a cracker.
‘Occupier’ belts along and is a superb head rush of a number that races along at one hundred miles per hour and takes no prisoners on route.
I felt `Observer` was slightly less hurried and was much more thoughtful and reflective, both lyrically, and musically.
Finally, `Outsider` returns to a more frantic pace that bounces along and will have you at the very least tapping your foot to it.
There was so much to enjoy on Dead Nice`s EP and it has really whetted my appetite for much more of the same. It`s a ten-minute taster of some glorious melodic yet-raw punk come post-punk and I must admit I had it on replay for longer than was probably healthy.
Get `Obscene` with Dead Nice, you know it makes sense.
