Like the distillation of The Velvet Underground, Blondie and Mazzy Star at their untameable best, Lucigenic own a compelling sound both classic and dynamic. Directly following previous 2021 single “Hope”, but a world away from its dreamy stratospheres; the five-piece return this Summer with an altogether darker, grittier, and feverish affair on: ”Still Breathing”.
With Lucy Davies’ distinctive vocal pitch leading the charge, “Still Breathing” tackles the effects of social media and the feelings of disconnect that it can induce. As Lucy explains:
“‘Still Breathing’ was written early last year and reflects how easily life can take people down the wrong track , losing sight of true heroism and measuring success by popularity from the false, virtual world of social media.”
A masterclass in unadulterated alternative rock unafraid to break the mould, the release features a number of major names who aided the band in bringing the electrifying track to life. With a double drummer attack from 2 esteemed drumming legends Dave Barbarossa (Bow Wow Wow, Republica) and Simon Wolstencroft (The Fall/Ian Brown). Elsewhere, Mark Refoy (Spiritualized/Spacemen 3) adds his uniquely mesmeric guitar shimmers.
The supplementary efforts come alongside the typically accomplished and esoteric playing of Lucigenic’s guitarist Gary Wyatt and bassist Mark Woolfenden, with Chris Toole on keyboards bringing his own flair to proceedings.
Produced by legendary producer Mike Bennett (The Fall / Fat White Family / Ian Brown), “Still Breathing” was engineered at Farheath Studios with Angus Wallace. The track arrives with an official video of the band in the studio, directed by Jim Solan of ‘Wolf Films’. Watch here.
Lucigenic released their debut EP ‘1’ in 2020, which featured three tracks with Spencer Birtwistle (Intastella /The Fall) on drums, plus appearances from original drummer Stewart Burnett (The Cheaters). With plans for its follow-up later this year, “Still Breathing” is one of three tracks set to appear on their next EP, which will be released digitally and on bespoke 10 inch vinyl.
A track true to Lucigenic’s magnetic style, but one which also offers exhilarating new depths of versatility, “Still Breathing” is a single alive with pulse-quickening passion and entrenched musical expertise that finds this Manchester outfit going from strength to strength.
Planning a series of live shows around the release, Lucigenic will headline The Snug in Manchester on Saturday 7th August, plus are also confirmed to appear at the after show party of the Macclesfield Festival at ‘Mash Guru’ on Friday 22nd October. Tickets are on sale now.
