There are moments when you can escape everything except yourself. For Love Is Noise, that feeling becomes the subject of “the rain that follows me”, the second single from their forthcoming EP The space between happiness and heartache. – a deeply personal, atmospheric and crushing new chapter from a band who have spent the past few years relentlessly pushing the boundaries of what they can become.
Following the release of “smile.”, which introduced the EP’s pursuit of happiness and its message of hope, “the rain that follows me” turns the light down. It’s about the invisible weight that follows us through difficult moments and the pressure that can build when there seems to be no opportunity to simply step away from the world.
For vocalist Cameron Humphrey, that feeling is particularly familiar. “ ‘the rain that follows me.’ is about the cloud that forms over our heads in difficult times or even everyday life. I’ve had those moments, especially in an industry that forces you to be in the public eye of some sorts. Sometimes the pressure of it all can take its toll. This song is asking the world to take that pressure away just for a little bit so I/we can enjoy the beauty of life.”
It’s a beautifully candid admission from a band who have spent much of their career turning internal conflict into something enormous and cinematic. And that emotional honesty sits at the very heart of ‘The Space Between Happiness And Heartache.’
Since the release of their breakthrough debut album ‘To Live In A Different Way’, Love Is Noise have undergone a remarkable evolution. What began as an emerging UK heavy act has developed into something far more difficult to categorise, a band capable of moving seamlessly between extreme heaviness, soaring atmosphere, electronic experimentation and moments of startling vulnerability.
Now they’re taking that evolution further. ‘the space between happiness and heartache.’ is a concept EP built around an unnamed character who creates an artificial world in an attempt to hide from how they really feel. Across the record, Love Is Noise explore depression, anxiety, isolation and low self-worth, examining the masks people construct in order to survive everyday life.
But rather than simply telling the character’s story, the band have deliberately left the world open to interpretation.
The result is their most ambitious and personal release to date and, crucially, one they have created almost entirely on their own terms.
For the first time, Cameron Humphrey and guitarist Alex Ioannou have co-produced the EP, with Cam performing all the drums, while Sam Clark and Alex perform guitar and bass throughout. Alex also takes a much larger vocal role, adding a new dimension to the band’s sound.
Sonically, the record pushes Love Is Noise into heavier and more experimental territory. The band’s trademark collision of atmosphere and intensity is expanded into something darker, more cinematic and more unpredictable, with ‘The rain that follows me.’ capturing that tension perfectly: the feeling of being overwhelmed by the weight of everything around you while desperately searching for a moment of peace.
That idea extends into the EP’s visual world. Drawing inspiration from The Truman Show, The Matrix, Dark City and Batman: The Animated Series, Love Is Noise have created a universe of dark deco, artificial realities and beautiful decay — a world that looks alluring from the outside while becoming increasingly unsettling the further you enter it.
And while the EP explores the idea of an artificial world, its creation has been deliberately human. The artwork was entirely hand-drawn by artist @msudrawings, with no AI used anywhere across the project, while Sam has built the EP’s website, allowing the world surrounding ‘the space between happiness and heartache.’ to exist beyond the music itself.
It’s a fitting contradiction for a record about escaping reality: Love Is Noise have constructed an entirely fictional world while making their most honest music yet. ‘The rain that follows me.’ is another glimpse into that world, but ultimately its message is remarkably simple. Sometimes you don’t need to fix everything. Sometimes you just need the pressure to stop for long enough to breathe, look around and remember that there’s still beauty in being alive.
Love Is Noise are no longer simply building on what came before. They’re building something entirely their own.
