In Your (Slut)Face

Norwegian feminist punks with plenty to say

Let’s skip the getting-to-know-yous – this is Slutface – unapologetically rawk, beguilingly badass and perhaps fortuitously feminist. Their debut is savoured with the release of new single ‘Shave My Head’; a one-two punch with B-Side ‘Get My Own’ – out now via 0E0E (Propeller Recordings).

With the likes of DIY and Consequence Of Sound lining up to premiere its collective parts, the single lands ahead of Slutface’s UK live debut next week – a headline slot, no less, for DIY Presents at London’s Old Blue Last on October 24. The show is free, with support from Rickyfitts and Annabel Allum.

“At the time we wrote ‘Shave My Head’, I was thinking a lot about the expectation we have for women to act in a hysterical way,” explains American-born frontwoman Haley Shea. “Why women are portrayed negatively as hysterical and emotional, whereas crazy men are portrayed as tortured geniuses. ‘Bitches be crazy’ and such. It’s also a lot about the way we view femininity and relationships and what we expect women to be and how they should behave.”

As the title may suggest, ‘Get My Own’ takes a more beeline approach: “Whereas Shave My Head’ was a kind of ironic view on how we portray women, ‘Get My Own’ is a more direct set of demands.”

The A/B-Side took shape under the watchful eye of producer Marius Hagen (Team Me); recorded to tape after copious amounts of coffee… “Like a Dave Grohl amount of coffee,” adds guitarist Tor-Arne Vikingstad.

“The sound you hear at the end of ‘Shave My Head’ is me jumping up and down on, and absolutely destroying, this terrible cheap guitar we bought on the Norwegian version of Craigslist,” he says. “We got this really shitty guitar and an amp for 40 pounds and were just going to record the smashing, but ended up using both the amp and the guitar on ‘Get My Own’.” Watch the demolition, and other Slutface antics, here:
