The Tarantino-twang of Jamie Webster’s latest single, Davey Kane gains a new layer of drama as Jack McMullen, recently seen in BBC One prison drama, Time, takes the lead in the track’s just-revealed video. Evoking the brutality and futility of the prison system, the video finds Webster and McMullen coming together as two of Liverpool’s exciting, new working class of artistic and sporting talent to stand up and speak out for those they have seen left behind and let down by the nation’s archaic justice system.
Riding high having announced a huge homecoming Liverpool’s vast, 11,000 capacity M&S Bank Arena on Sat 19 November 2022 the high-charting singer-songwriter chose Davey Kane as the third single to be lifted from his forthcoming, second album, Moments. The follow up to last year’s Top Ten-charting debut, We Get By, will be released via Modern Sky UK on Fri 28 January 2022.
Seeing young friends fall into the hands of the prison system and having the long shadow of the mistakes of their youth darken their adult years, Webster sings the life of Davey Kane from real-world observation. Brought into even greater relief with the renowned talents of McMullen, capable of bringing both high-drama and due sensitivity to the most intense of scenes, Webster continues to skewer the hypocrisy and recklessness and the pig-headed political and social systems that shape the world around him.
As friends and still-rising artists in their field, Webster and McMullan represent a new confidence and unofficial leadership of Liverpool from its working-class foundations, alongside sports stars such as UFC fighters Paddy Pimblett and Molly McCann and boxer, Peter McGrail, on top of so many other, emergent musicians and athletes.
The pair came together to shoot the gritty video in a specially-arranged shoot at Liverpool’s Bridewell Studios, directed by Kieran and Corey Riddiough.
Jack McMullen says of his appearance: “I’ve been a big fan of Jamie for a long time and as soon as that first riff blasted through my speakers, I knew I wanted to be involved. The song sounds like something worthy of a Tarantino soundtrack and addresses an issue that’s close to home for me. I’m grateful to Jamie for allowing me to be part of it.”
Like the rest of the tracks from Moments, the single’s development at the legendary Rockfield Studios in the company of producer, Dave Eringa means that the lyrical messages are borne on a wave of surging and emotive instrumentation. Likened to his own heroes, such as The La’s Lee Mavers and accepting Shack’s Mick Head’s seal of approval, Webster’s rise continues to escalate at pace.
2021’s earlier singles Days Unknown and Going Out tore into the streaming charts on release, continuing to demonstrate the weigh of feeling for Webster amongst those in the know, and set a steady course towards a momentous 2022.
