ERIC SARDINAS – MIDNIGHT JUNCTION (2023)

Published:

Nothing finds freshness like the blues.

I was considering this matter earlier, and to be honest there’s not a genre that better exemplifies the idea that nothing has changed yet everything has altered.

As such Eric Sardinas’ “Midnight Junction” album takes listeners on a bluesy journey with a mix of classic and fresh vibes. “The Long Shot” contains the lyric “the devils dealing with cards with odds a million to one” thus ensuring he’s delivering the most blues line of 2023 while showcasing exceptional slide guitar playing. “Tonight” boogies with a nose for trouble, and “Said And Done” immerses itself in the honky-tonk piano realms.

As ever with the blues, there are so many textures, though. “Planks Of Pine” is primal, featuring backing vocals reminiscent of a chain gang, and “Julep” grooves with a playful spirit. Charlie Musslewhite’s harp on “Swamp Cooler” is utterly sensational, and “Miracle Mile” stands out as a sensational take on 12-bar blues—classic yet refreshingly contemporary.

Paying homage to Rory Gallagher is always welcome, and the version of  “Laundromat” is commendable, though acknowledging that perfection is hard to improve upon.

Ever eager to stretch itself, the acoustic tones of “Muddy Water” shift the dynamic, while “Lock And Key” exudes a sense of glee, appealing to fans of bands like the Black Crowes (of which I’m a lifelong one)

“White Lightning” brings a soulful undertone to the forefront, and “The Liquor Store” is more fun than the ensuing hangover. The instrumental beauty of “Emilia” shines, showcasing gorgeous playing that captivates throughout the album.

But look, we all know Eric Sardinas can play, but where “Midnight Junction” really scores is the way he moulds the songs. This is a turn that feels absolutely right.
