Enter The Josh Pit

Brooding Brighton singer/songwriter Josh McGovern has released the video for his new single ‘The Devil Below Me’.

The video is full of emotion and follows the moving journey of a man addressing his past problems; capturing his guilt, repentance and heartbreak.

Regarding ‘The Devil Below Me’, Josh says, “I really wanted to make a video that would complement the story of the song. I guess it’s all about burying your past problems. The video was filmed and edited by my good friend and filmmaker Sam Shaw. It took five separate shoots to film because we were battling the English weather but it ended up being something that I’m really proud of.”

The song opens with McGovern’s achingly beautiful voice. His unique deep tones give way to heavy, daydreaming Americana, intertwined with haunting folk sensibilities and rich blues notes. The result is reminiscent of Nick Cave, Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen.

Continuing to address the single Josh says, I was first inspired to write ‘The Devil Below Me’ as a response to change in my life. The song itself is a tale of past conflicts and a study of myself. It is very personal to me, it reflects on my family tree and past mistakes. I wanted to create something that represented the contrast in people’s lives, something people could relate to on a deeper level. The recording process was very special for me, I had the honour of recording at Retreat Studios where Nick Cave recently recorded a large portion of ‘Skeleton Tree’.”

McGovern has received early support from BBC Introducing, and is proving to be a big live draw. He provides a raw new energy for UK singer/songwriters, delivering beautifully enticing songs of eerie intimacy.
