DIRTY POWER SAY FAREWELL

Published:

International rock-trio Dirty Power have today released ‘Farewell’, the closing chapter of the three originals on Dirty Power’s forthcoming EP ‘Gravitas’. Following on from ‘I Did My Time’ and ‘Said And Done’, which over the past 2 months have garnered over 20,000 streams / views, Farewell echoes the stripped back, roots driven and unplugged ‘industri-coustic’ approach of Gravitas, with an anime storyline video created for the release. “Inspired by the likes of Nirvana’s ‘Something In The Way’, Shane MacGowan, The Dubliners, The Fields Of Athenry and The Parting Glass, we reached for a degree of personal gravitas that allows for this subtler sound to find its place amongst our heavier music” – Brendan

Late 2023 to early 2024 sees the release of Dirty Power’s singles from the new EP ‘Gravitas’. The five tracks (three originals and two covers) are an ‘alternative acoustic rock & metal’ return to personal, cultural and musical roots, following the band’s previous hard-hitting EP – ‘Notions’ (which was recorded in London).

Driven by the individual and collective circumstances before and during the Covid pandemic lockdowns, ‘Gravitas’ is a chapter in Dirty Power’s (otherwise heavy and distorted rock) music, akin to Nirvana’s ‘Unplugged In New York’, or Metallica’s ‘S&M’, as more of an intimate and subtle expression of potent and redemptive subjects – those life lessons that come from the disillusionment of notions; the impact of being confronted with, and ultimately assimilating, gravitas.

Though not recorded in front of a live audience, ‘Gravitas’ was recorded live in the band frontman’s pirate ancestor’s castle, in Baltimore, on the South-West coast of Ireland. That was made possible by bringing onboard recording-, mixing- and mastering-engineers who all had worked recently with the most exciting band to come out of Ireland since Thin Lizzy – ‘The Scratch’. That audio production, combined with live filming of the performances and behind the scenes footage, by the cameraman who filmed The Rubber Bandits’ ‘Horse Outside’, made for a complete, once-in-a-lifetime capturing of this badly-needed return to roots and reclaiming of perspective during that difficult time.

The thematic story arc across the three original tracks is further expressed in the videos, with original anime having been made specially, to convey the feelings with a comfort and familiarity similar to watching Saturday morning cartoons. Once Dirty Power reach the two covers at the end of the EP, they serve as an after-party of sorts, celebrating the legacy and ongoing impact of two highly influential songs of Irish origin, neither of which have ever been given such a respectful, heavy-rocking conversion treatment.
