Legendary guitarist Dave Hill, founding lead guitarist of Slade, releases “She Had a Troubled Heart”, the latest track to be taken from his long awaited debut solo album, Dirty Foot Lane, which is released on October 30.

Following the heavier rock of his previous single, “She Had a Troubled Heart” reveals a very different side of Hill’s songwriting. Built around a hypnotic rhythm and pulse, atmospheric layers and an evocative early-fifties-style twang guitar sound, the track gradually draws the listener in, creating a mood that is as important as the melody itself.
It is a song that Hill almost ignored.
“I began work on this song many years ago, and for quite a while all I had was the basic melody, without a title or lyrics,” explains Hill. “On the initial demo I played the tune on my guitar, but I had the idea that cellos and pianos would feature on the finished song. I listened to that demo many times and then, suddenly, from nowhere, came the phrase ‘she had a troubled heart’. The song seemed to be intuitively growing.”
At first, Hill had no specific story in mind. That changed when he encountered a friend who shared her own sad story with him.
“It wasn’t until I bumped into a friend who told me her sad story that I knew exactly what the song was about and had all the lyrics,” says Hill.
Musically, the track represented an important development for Hill. Working alongside his long-time musical partner John Berry and producer, songwriter and musician Rob Childs, Hill began experimenting with a more layered and atmospheric approach to recording, with Django Holder overseeing the track’s final production and mastering.
“Rob played the early-fifties ‘twangy’ guitar sound on his Gretsch guitar,” says Hill. “Both he and John did a great job on this song, as it wasn’t as straightforward as you might think. It was about carefully creating and sustaining an atmosphere. It’s more about layering sounds and blending than putting a sound directly down.”
Perhaps most importantly, the recording taught Hill the value of restraint.
“It required one of the trickiest things to put in music – space and air. It needed to breathe. This was the song where I really found my voice.”
“She Had a Troubled Heart” ultimately became a turning point in the development of Dirty Foot Lane. Having discovered this new approach to recording – using layers, atmosphere and emotion, Hill began to see a different path for the album, even as several of the heavier songs were still to come.
“There were still a few heavier songs to record, but there were more like ‘She Had a Troubled Heart’. And one that was even more ethereal. We’ll come to that later.”
Dirty Foot Lane is an autobiographical collection of songs inspired by Hill’s remarkable journey from his working-class upbringing to international success. Blending hard rock, blues, folk and atmospheric textures, the album explores themes of ambition, family, resilience, mental health, gratitude and his lifelong passion for music.
The album marks an exciting new chapter in Hill’s extraordinary career, offering a revealing insight into an artist who remains as creative and passionate as ever after more than five decades at the forefront of British rock.
