What is “God Bless Honking Clover?” The song, out digitally today, is a stonking Jack-White inspired piece of gritty rock’n’roll that oozes cool straight out the vintage clothes store by the sea. “Honking Clover was a mysterious social media profile that interacted with our content, claiming to be the “tiniest man in the world”. After drinking a few too many Spritz in Venice during our tour with the Rival Sons last year, we decided to investigate and it turns out it wasn’t the tiniest man in the world, or even a man. We like the sonority of the username Honking Clover, so God bless that!” explains Creeping Jean guitarist Rod.
Recording both new tracks directly inside “Mammoth” their retro second-hand clothes shop in Brighton on a rainy Sunday last November, using the piles of 70’s clothes and vintage Levi’s as sound insulators worked surprisingly well. Produced & Engineered again by Dan Crook (who also produced last year’s new Creeping Jean album “Business Is Dead”) Crook made the upstairs changing rooms into his production booth. This release is recorded on the highstreet for the highstreet, capturing the raw energy of their music inside the very shop that has helped fund their journey.
Frontman Oliver Tooze explains: “The shop has been the backbone of everything we’ve done, so recording inside it just felt right. We shut up shop for the day, and recorded the two new tracks crammed inside with all the jeans, leather jackets, and belts. We just went for it. It was chaotic but perfect.”
Sunday shoppers peered through the window display or danced in the street as the band tore through “Spice Rack” and “God Bless Honking Clover.”
Championed by BBC 6 Music’s Amy Lamé, and chosen last year as main support for American rock’n’roll band Rival Sons’ sell-out European tour last summer, this young band are making all the right moves. This April the band play a string of headline shows supporting their new double A-side release, then they will play with These Wicked Rivers on their Churches Tour this June.
The band continue to offer up huge indie-rock tunes with seaside spirit and goodtime groove to get you up and dancing, and reaching for the sunglasses as you strut down the street. Maybe that’s why their growing audience is so young and hip “It was the most thrilling and at times chaotic gig that I’ve seen from an upcoming band for quite some time and all in front of a young hipster crowd who let the good times roll.” writes Mark Taylor (Record Collector)
