Singer-songwriter Gareth Dunlop has today issued his 2020 EP ‘Born Uncool’ on CD format. A sonic left-turn that melded the sounds of his previous acoustic and roots offerings with electronic soundscapes, it was recorded and self-produced at his home studio in Belfast during the first lockdown. It was also a collection of songs that provided the stepping stone to creating his acclaimed current album, ‘Animal’.
The EP includes the fan favourite ‘In A Hundred Years’, of which Dunlop states: I think of how this song came about almost every time I’m sitting backstage getting ready to go on. Back in 2018 I was getting ready to walk out and play my biggest home show to date. I was feeling the pressure of the moment and trying to get psyched up and battle my nerves, when a friend of mine saw that I was a bit on edge and pulled me in for a few words of Irish wisdom. He said ‘don’t worry too much because in a hundred years nobody’s going to give a f*** about your gig.’ It did the trick… I thought about that weird perspective in the weeks after the show and it set my mind rolling on all the trivial things that keep us from living in the moment. It felt like a good thing to write about and something I personally need to be reminded of every now and then. The hardest part about writing the song was figuring out when to stop, as there was a lot to pull from.”
Having just completed a UK tour opening for American legend Bonnie Raitt, Dunlop will play two sold-out London dates with US country music hit-maker Josh Turner at the Union Chapel on 12th-13th July, followed by his own headlining show in the capital at The Lower Third on 16th November.
