Chicago indie-rock band TIME THIEVES formed when frontman Jonathan Pool (guitar, lead vocals) and Mike Oberlin (drums) tossed around the idea of forming a power pop band after spending years in Chicago’s punk scene. After releasing several singles and covers since their debut album `Space`, the power pop quartet is releasing the first larger collection in years with the upcoming “Come Home” EP. , the band welcomed Annie Saunders on bass as well as Tim Reynolds on lead guitar, with both of them sharing backup vocal duties.
This five track extended play opens with `Cover My Ears` which at just under two minutes in length is a really enticing earworm of a number with some understated shimmering guitar riffs and a vocal that just eases into your psyche. A track that may be about a failed relationship that you`re trying to block out. We have a slow burn fuzzy vibe to `Feels Different`, an introspective offering which seems to relate to a first love which went askew and returning to your hometown and the scene of an unspoken incident that tipped the balance to see if you can understand what went wrong.
`Remember I Forgot` is a pounding thumping appealing foot tapper where the protagonist can`t seem to avoid making the same mistakes as in the past despite recognising them but at the same time almost subconsciously wanting to fail. A kind of sisyphean scenario. There`s a heavy grinding almost grungy stoner texture to `Forever Drifting` which advocates the joys of doing what you want and not being associated or tied to anyone. It becomes fairly chant like and anthemic towards the end.
This release closes out with title track `Come Home` a fairly melodic meditative number to close out on which is about missing that certain somebody when they`re not around.
There was much to enjoy from this seasoned power pop quartet from The Windy City and hopefully on the strength of the `Come Home` EP there may be an album not to far on the horizon. Here`s hoping………
