Blue Violet are an alternative indie duo who comprise of husband-and-wife Sam Gotley and Sarah McGrigor. They previously performed under the guise of Broken Bones Matilda before regrouping to form Blue Violet, Blue for their melancholic element and Violet for the vividness.
They have a new album called `Faux Animaux` due towards the end of January 2025 which translates to fake animals or something that is artificial but intended to look real.
They arrive in Birmingham’s up and coming district of Digbeth and share a thirty-minute set tonight which highlighted songs from their upcoming album and a few from 2022`s debut ‘Late Night Tales’. The show opens with the laid back dreamy `Undercover` that had a much more bluesy edge shared live.
`Imagine Me` is a melodic alluring number which hints at a something more intimate to follow and a taster from the forthcoming release. The band share `Fire` which is the latest single and has an enticing rhythmic beat to it.
It`s back to the debut album for `Hard Rain` which has a kind of edgy vibe with Sam leading us in vocally before Sarah adds her harmonies before taking over the vocal lead. `Human After All` is a faster paced rockier, pounding, thumping number and was a one off single. The show closes out with `Asylum` a pulsing composition which addresses the difficult subject of mental health issues.
On the strength of the new songs shared tonight, `Faux Animaux` sounds like it`ll be a superb follow up to `Late Night Tales`. It was a cold and wet Winter`s evening in Birmingham but Blue Violet allowed a ray of sunshine to brighten the evening for a short time.
