BAND OF THE DAY: LOST COUSINS

Published:

Dream rock outfit Lost Cousins is thrilled to announce the release of their highly anticipated sophomore album, “Point No Point,” on July 21, 2023 (Pheromone Recordings / Cadence Music Group). Today, fans are introduced to their exhilarating and introspective lead single, “Plain Sight,” which is available for streaming here. Watch the accompanying video, which the band shot on an old camcorder during the recording process here.

“Plain Sight” represents a significant step for the band, as lead singer and multi-instrumentalist Cam Duffin explains, “It’s a journey out of the shadows of self-doubt and into the realm of confidence. The song captures the essence of hindsight and the lessons learned from relationships that have undergone profound changes. Its lyrics encapsulate moments of nostalgia, from screaming out your favourite songs with a friend on a road trip to experiencing those emotional memories alone years later on a similar journey. It’s about moving in the same direction while growing apart and discovering one’s full potential.”

While the lead single is certainly a highlight, each of the eleven tracks that make up “Point No Point” marks a significant milestone in Lost Cousins’ growth and artistic evolution, showcasing the band’s unwavering commitment to creating honest and emotionally resonant music. With its powerful melodies, poignant lyrics, and exceptional performances, “Point No Point” takes listeners on a unique departure from the ordinary. In order to fully realize the band’s sonic visions for the album, Lost Cousins enlisted Leon Taheny, a co-owner of Union Sound in Toronto (Owen Pallett, Fucked Up, METZ, Weaves, The Rural Alberta Advantage), for engineering and co-production assistance. The album was then mixed by the accomplished Austin-based engineer Chris Shaw (Death Cab for Cutie, Wilco, Modest Mouse, and Half Moon Run).

In keeping with the album’s natural themes of nostalgia and discovery, Lost Cousins chose to self-record at a remote mountaintop chalet near Val-David, Quebec, where they lived and worked together for an entire summer. Each member brought an extensive collection of musical gear, ensuring a seamless and barrier-free creative process. In so doing, the band was free to explore their own formative memories from the diverse landscapes of Canada, which influenced the aural and lyric direction of each track. From the forest lakes in Ontario, the Pacific Ocean in British Columbia, small Toronto apartments, and the Laurentians in Quebec, each location served as a distinct creative point, all meant to immerse listeners in the rich and evocative tapestry of the band’s sonic journey.
