Albert Hammond continues to be a commanding presence in popular music after six decades of solo hits (“It Never Rains in Southern California”) and signature songs for the likes of Whitney Houston, Tina Turner, Julio Iglesias and Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Starship (and the list goes on and on…). On his upcoming album, “Body of Work,” Albert breaks a near 20-year silence to grace the world with his strongest and most personal collection to date. Amongst the wide ranging 17 tracks on “Body of Work,” new single and video (the third to appear prior to album release on March 1st) “Shake A Bone” is a stand-out. Wedding a deceptively simple and slinky acoustic riff with some down-to-earth common-sense musing (“No other day was like the day ahead / No second chances when you’re cold and dead”), the track navigates the sonic terrain between Americana, alt-country, rock and pop. With a few contemporary flourishes sprinkled in (the album was recorded at legendary Hansa Studios in Berlin), the sum of its parts is pure Albert Hammond genius. Against the backdrop of personal and professional break-ups and shake-ups, health scares and a full-blown worldwide pandemic, Albert retreated within himself to find the words and music to make sense of it all. 2024 finds the artist older (he will celebrate his 80th birthday in May) and wiser, but still grappling to reconcile the beauty with the struggles of the world. “Body of Work” is, indeed, the soundtrack of a lifetime and “Shake a Bone” reminds us “the music’s everywhere/ once you think that you can dance.” |
