Nitrate have been knocking around for a decade, and “Feel The Heat” is their fourth album.
The band’s history is complicated, with Rob Wylde of Tigertailz passing through at one point (he co-writes a couple here) but they’ve always been a name to drop in AOR circles, with albums long out of print.
This one – like the others- a nostalgic journey back to the ’80s, where “Feel The Night” itself kicks off with real 80s keyboards, transporting you to a world of shoulder pads and Dallas. “All The Right Moves” embraces an FM vibe, whether dated or never in fashion, while “Wild In The City” takes you back in time with its lively keyboards.
Sprinkled with a bit of stardust too, as Paul Laine is on backing vocals, production is from the team who helms Vega records and an appearance from legendary songwriter Bob Mitchell.
“Need A Little Love” echoes the spirit of a Whitesnake Power Ballad, daring you to resist its charm. The exceptional duet “One Kiss (To Save My Heart)” with melodic rock goddess Issa showcases both wonderful vocals and a soaring solo.
“Live Fast, Die Young” may not sound dangerous, but its classy vibe suggests a cocoa and early night preference. “Haven’t Got Time For Heartache” brings chunky chords and fists in the air, and even if they’re not missing you at all, “Charm” still captures attention.
“Strike Like A Hurricane” carries the obligatory “whoah” hook, evoking thoughts of “You Give Love A Bad Name.” “Big Time” caters to dreamers and features the added allure of cowbell. The album concludes with the lovely ballad “Stay,” offering a fitting finale to this nostalgic musical journey.
For years FM and Vega have had this sewn up. No longer. Nitrate are here, and if they aren’t the animals of the Suede song of yore, then at least you can come on feel the heat.
Excellent stuff.
