But in a life before strategized campaigning, audience grooming and formulaic intent, musicians were still swinging the bat. Sometimes with precision – sometimes flailing wildly – but ALWAYS swinging.
Praying for that satisfying crack as songs and the ideas contained within struck – then accelerated beyond both of their origins, stylistic restraints and even their creators themselves.
Like airborne emissaries – they rocketed deep into the fertile, soft, grassy green psyche of the wide-eyed listener, where they would take root and blossom into a multitude of wild and exotic flowers… sometimes untameable weeds… They also gave people stuff to whistle whilst on the toilet… Because… you do know?… everything can’t be EVERYTHING right?
GTA step back up to the plate after a 20-year hiatus to pitch you their best with “Pass Me The Conch”. An eclectic, disruptive, powerhouse, curveball collection of tracks that are part hysteria, part cynicism, part heartbreak, part deadly intent and part love letter.
They give you a window to the world… then throw you out of it. They want to rock your face in, then funk you until you can’t stand it – to celebrate all those missed moments – the lost observations – to vocalise the stillborn soundtracks to situations past and to come.
They even wrapped it all up for you in one aerodynamic, hard and waxy speedball.
So come with them – Breath out those nerves as we walk together onto the field of play.
Just never take your eye off the ball.
Because this pitch could decide the whole game.
“Popular wisdom would have it that you have your whole life to write your first album… compared to ‘Pass Me The Conch’ it feels like most people are kinda rushing it” Jay Butler 2022
