Back in 2022, Italian hard rockers Tenebra dropped ‘Moongazer’ on London label New Heavy Sounds, an absolute feast of hard rock, psych blues and punk attitude, magnificently topped off by the unique soulful whiskey-soaked voice of Silvia Feninno. A scorching record steeped in Sabbathian proto metal while brilliantly managing to avoid all the cliches. Nearly five years on, it still blows the roof off.
Now the band are set to return with an album scheduled for 2027.
But before that, a little taster, an intriguing yet vital piece of the story so far. One that is deliberately detached from their usual musical trajectory. But nevertheless, still mighty to behold. A new EP called “A Death Chant”, released on 9th October, which explores the band’s more avant-garde, experimental, psychedelic, and electronic side.
The band says.
“A Death Chant” was recorded and mixed live by the band and Bruno Germano at Vacuum Studio and mastered by Carl Saff, the ep’s three tracks make extensive use of synthesizers, acoustic instruments, and sound manipulation. While maintaining our signature style, employing a timbral and compositional vocabulary previously unfamiliar to Tenebra’s sonic world.
The album is a reflection on the theme of death and its acceptance, divided into three chapters. “Death Chant,” the first track, represents the death that has just occurred. “Drugs Are Overrated” embodies the confusion and drama of missing the person who has just passed away; and “Tell Me What You See” explores the acceptance of death, but also the scar that will remain forever.
The EP cover is inspired by medieval solar representations, but while in these drawings the sun is proud and represents the splendour of divine grace, on the EP cover the sun is weeping and contrite, powerless to face the end of earthly life”.

The EP recording sessions took place immediately before the LP, deliberately using instruments not usually employed by the band, to emphasize a different, alien atmosphere from their usual sound. Nevertheless, it still packs a mighty punch and is a beguiling, heavy psychedelic prelude to their new full-length ‘The Black Fanfare’ which is due in the new year.
That is one worth waiting for, no doubt about it.
The EP will be available via New Heavy Sounds on all digital platforms.
There will also be a very limited vinyl release on Bandcamp only through the band’s own label here: https://tenebra666.bandcamp.com/album/a-death-chant-ep
