Brighton noise rock trio STAFF PARTY are pleased to reveal their new single ‘Dread’—the title track from their forthcoming debut EP Dread, which will be released on 25th April 2023.
Commenting on the new single and themes on the EP, frontman Ed Lamb says: “I have tried—but am completely unable to—write happy songs. When I want to write about something, typically I take a look around and something which pisses me off, confuses me, or scares me, is usually what inspires me the most. It’s hard not to draw on the awful state and chaos the world is in at the moment, as well. Just browsing the Internet can be a rich and endless source of horror.”
“I also consider myself a fairly introspective, and potentially sentimental person, so much of what I write about is based on aspects of my own psyche and personality. It feels cathartic to articulate those thoughts in the form of loud, aggressive music. I enjoy the fact that ‘Dread’, with probably the most upbeat and bouncy sounding instrumental, still has these introspective dark lyrics to juxtapose it. I couldn’t even let the fun catchy song be nice.”
The Dread EP was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Paul ‘Win’ Winstanley at Brighton Electric, with additional tracking at Winstanley’s studio. “We met JP at Brighton Electric, and he’s almost become a fourth member of the band now in terms of how he’s helped us refine and craft our sound,” says Lamb. “He got exactly what we were going for immediately, and his deep knowledge in both song craft and engineering has really helped us elevate the songs.”
The track follows on from pounding lead single ‘Ego Death’ which was released earlier this year—a blistering introduction to the three piece’s sound which picked up support from The Punk Site, Scene Point Blank, Maximum Volume and more.
Formed in Brighton in early 2020 by Ed Lamb (Guitar/Vocals), and JP Townsend (Drums), later joined by Chazz Welfare (Bass), STAFF PARTY play their own brand of finely calibrated, frenetic, and loud as hell noise rock. Expect thick walls of noisy guitar; tense, throat shredding vocals; pounding, virtuosic drums; and muscular, powerful bass.
Potentially one of Brighton’s loudest live bands—if they get their way—Staff Party’s songwriting is as much inspired by 90s/00s noise rock and post hardcore acts such as Shellac, Melvins, The Jesus Lizard, At-The-Drive-In, and Unsane, as it is by grunge and alternative rock titans Smashing Pumpkins, Dinosaur Jr, and Stone Temple Pilots.
Most recently supporting USA NAILS, New Pagans, and OHHMS, the band will be announcing further live dates over the coming months.
