The years seem to have flown by since the Liarbilitys put out their brilliant first album in 2018 and played rebellion introducing stage. This new album was worth the wait. Opener ‘There Will Be Blood’ sets the standard for the rest of the album, expertly played with killer sing along choruses. The lyrics are cool throughout with great stories which ‘Sickbed’ showcases with riffs as catchy as they come.
Title track ‘Vandalheart’ has everything you would want in a punk tune and moves around with ease. ‘Youtha Joyce’ starts with guitar and vocal before launching into a humorous tale of a comprehensive education – the backing vocals and chorus lines are killer. ‘I took cocaine in a maths exam and no one gave a shit’ – classic. ‘Strangeways’ is another belter from start to finish.
‘Sin Em All’ is probably one of the catchiest tunes you will hear – and references some punk classics – the guitar is something rancid would be proud of and they bring it down and back up with ease. Next track ‘Gutta Percha’ starts like something the Levellers might do and explodes into a punk anthem that people will be singing along to for years. The lyrics are quality and this is the best track on the album for me.
Not unlike early Clash their stories are informed by their own life experience, which ‘Battering Wall’ demonstrates to great effect. The references to other bands and albums/tracks are a nice touch. The album really doesn’t give you time to breath and ‘Daisy You’re Gonna Wind Up Dead’ keeps the pace with a sublime guitar solo and ‘I Live On The Strand’ is short sharp shock treatment.
The album ends in style with ‘The Armada’ which starts like a sea shanty with tom-tom grooves and guitar before erupting into a fast based punk classic. The style changes show their playing ability and the ac/dc ish ending is class. This song maybe about themselves as it would seem they have been mates for years.
This album is packed full of absolute bangers with massive choruses and the playing is top notch. They obviously don’t just throw this shit together. While some might class this as street punk, the music in more complex than might appear and these guys can really play and know how to construct a song.
Ignoring my home city bias this is one of the best punk albums I’ve heard for a while. Having witnessed these tracks live at their recent album launch, they should be a must watch when they play the shows later in the year including Morecambe punk festival.
