The Davidson Trio release their new five track EP `Follow You` which follows on from their debut album `Cougar`. The band is a hard-rocking power trio based in Birmingham and led by Owen Davidon, the bass player and five-octave vocalist (formerly with Uli Jon Roth & Rumour). Along with Owen there`s guitarist Ben Bicknell who was Davidson’s fellow band member in the Glenn Hughes tribute called Black Country Community, while the band is powered by Ellis Brown on drums.
`Mr Greasy Snake` opens this extended play and it`s a deep and resonating slice of blues that relates to those shady characters whom you meet and who appear to offer help and assistance but they really just want to set you up to watch you crash and burn. There`s a sweet guitar solo midway through this opener. There more of a slow burn to the reflective `War` which considers the everyday battles we all face, the feeling of wanting to defend what we love the most whatever that may be. The music here almost mirrors the pensive nature of the struggles we face throughout our lives.
`Disillusion` is a view of the music industry all set against a slightly funky bluesy backing and really reminded me of the brilliant funk metal grammy award winners Living Colour which for me is no bad thing. The twin guitars almost give it away on `Song For Phil` which is a classy tribute to the late great Philo, Philip Parris Lynott the West Bromwich born Irish musician who was the co-founder, lead vocalist, bassist, and primary songwriter of the hard rock band Thin Lizzy. A band I saw ten times along with Grand Slam after Lizzy folded, it’s so hard to believe he`s been dead longer than he lived. RIP Phil and God Bless.
Tile track `Follow You` wraps things up. A ballad that recognises those you have lost or who are no longer in your life. A number straight from the heart. Gary Moore eat your heart out.
I can`t believe that I’d never heard of the Davison Trio as i`m a fellow Brummie but at least I now have another band to catch live and another slice of Brum that I can be proud of.
