If you can get Steve Stevens to play with you, then you are doing something right. Ask Billy Idol.
Anyway, he is here too, giving his unmistakable cool to the title track. And really, “I Survive” is almost the perfect 69 Eyes track. Goth for Poison fans, essentially, with Jyrki 69 – which, it should be said, is not his real name – deadpanning his way through it like only he can.
The other three are nearly as good. If you are taking on Thin Lizzy, then you had better be ready, and to be fair, they do a fine job with “Cold Sweat” – a song you would be hard pushed to get wrong, admittedly, but still one that demands a certain swagger.
The aforementioned Stevens could almost be playing “In The Misery” in his day job, because you can picture Billy Idol, shirtless and sneering, stalking all over this. “Like a lamb with a devil’s mark,” offers 69, and frankly, that is about the level of camp, cool menace we are here for.
This four-tracker ends with “Devils Rose,” which appears to be taking a ride with the Queen of the Zombies. Cool? Well, you would, wouldn’t you?
At this point in their career, these boys know exactly what they are doing. More than that, they are magnificent at it. And given that I am already predisposed to like EPs – all killer, no padding, get in, make your point, get out – there is absolutely nothing not to love here.
The 69 Eyes have licked it into shape again.
RATING: 8/10
