REVIEW : STRATEGIES – STRATEGIES EP (2022)

Published:

Strategies were formed remotely a couple of years ago between old friends guitarist Paul Lask (The Ghost, Tight Phantomz) who sent demos to drummer Neil Hennessy (Lawrence Arms, Joyce Manor) and vocalist Brian Moss (Great Apes, Hanalei, The Ghost). A four track self-titled EP is the result of this remote collaboration from the trio, all veterans of the early 2000s Chicago punk and indie rock scenes.

`Outages` introduces us to this alliance and it`s a delightfully dreamy quite mesmeric track that meanders along with lyrics that seem fairly introspective. There`s a much faster pace to the bass driven `Silent Count` which feels quite Summery and the sort of breezy track that is made for blasting out of a car stereo. We also have some enjoyably intricate gentle guitar chords towards the end.

Shimmering guitar riffs lead us into and along `Fire Drill` another number that has a kind of mellow vibe and probing lyrics. This extended play closes out with `Camp Elsewhere` which is beefier in volume but still retains that lightness of touch musically with a steady drumbeat, glistening guitar riffs and vocals that are shared atop and around.

Strategies eponymous four tracker is a subtle introduction to the band and their potential. There`s a further EP to follow and the threat of live shows, so it`ll be interesting to watch how this trio progresses.
