Russell Dickerson is known for his energy and electric songs. Think of “Bones The EP”, then, as a pause for breath—a moment where the sound of a man taking stock emerges.

“What A Life” is one of those songs. Try not to feel happy when it plays—and try not to be a little jealous. Contented in a way most of us never are, it sets the tone for much of what follows.

Country-flavored rather than honky-tonk ready, “Middle America”—and probably “Middle Everywhere,” to be honest—is having its first dance to this track. It’s universal in its appeal.

By and large, though, the EP is reflective too. “Miss You So (Letters To You)” will strike a chord with anyone who has ever soundtracked the big moments in their life with a song. Sure, maybe mine wasn’t Finch, but not everyone can have “This Ain’t A Love Song,” “Mr. Jones,” or “Little Lost Sometimes,” can they?

“Those Nights. These Days” continues the vibe: back home, down-home. You move on, but your heart doesn’t.

“Bones The EP” —appropriately enough—ends with a stripped-down version of “Cold Beer Conversation,” where savoring the little moments becomes the golden thread that runs through all five songs.

These five songs make for a superb EP—not just because it’s so well done, but because it captures the everyman ideal so beautifully.
