Mark Hegan is an Indie artist from Bangor, County Down, which lies on the east coast of Northern Ireland, on the south shore of the mouth of Belfast Lough, north east of central Belfast. He has recently released his debut EP entitled `Human Mind`.
This six track extended play opens with `Goodbye Love` a fairly expansive synth led number which seems to address the parting of a couple in a relationship that has come asunder. The chorus has an almost familiarity about it. A pleasant track to lead us in on. There`s much more urgency on `Something Right And Something Real` with some intricate musical intricacies as this number races along. A song about searching for much more in a relationship, possibly on a spiritual level.
`Borderline` really draws you in both musically and lyrically. I think the lyrics could be interpreted in a number of ways, maybe a reflection on the artist`s homeland and the division of the thirty two counties or maybe a metaphor for something deeper. We have a more ballad like reflection with `Ready For A Fight` which appears to have a more allegorical implication rather than a physical one.
Title track `Human Mind` is a deeply reflective nigh on introspective slow burn which allows the singer to share the depth of his varied vocal range. This extended play closes out with `Another Kind Of Blood` a really anthemic number that might well be about fighting to retain the spark in a relationship that may be wavering. The saxophone tones towards the end added a little something extra.
I thought that the `Human Mind` EP was a pretty interesting listen and gave a flavour of what Mark Hegan has to offer both musically and lyrically. It was also a good to discover a further up and coming singer-songwriter from the North of Ireland to add to more established artists such as Gareth Dunlop and Lee Rogers.
