Lovina Falls is the dark dream-pop project of Boston based Valerie Forgione, which blends experimental art-rock with emotional poetic lyricism. Lovina Falls’ new five track EP, `Would That It Were` is released this month.

`Light and Low` a recent single, leads us in and is an upbeat slice of melodic bass driven pop rock with lyrics about recognising and accepting a new way of thinking. It has a really enticing allure that really draws you in to its layers. We have a much more reflective offering with `About the Sun` which has some haunting resonating guitar chords and vocal harmonies and I can really appreciate as to why it`s a live favourite.

`Tragedy` reflects the singer’s frustration with society’s post-pandemic tension and how we’ve been treating each other. There is a sense of unease which permeates this number that feels as if it`s keeping itself in check. I read that `In The Corner, a Fire` is about curiosity, intrigue, and religious deconstruction and taking chances, regardless of the perceived risk. A track that has a real shimmer about it.

The final cut `Ellery Way` according to singer Valerie is about “being blissfully unaware of external chaos and breathing in a beautiful moment. It’s about navigating unfamiliar places with someone and embracing them fearlessly. It’s about taking control of your world – not letting the world take control of you.” A deeply reflective contemplative musing on maybe letting go and taking that that chance or opportunity that maybe will only come once in a lifetime.

I read that on `Would That It Were` there were songs of escape, of strength amongst the destruction, and the battle between good and evil but what really shone for me was the depth and variety of Valerie Forgione`s voice. There was at times a questioning reverberation, an almost haunting nature but a real strength throughout that thoroughly attracted, engaged, and almost beguiled me throughout these five tracks.

It`s been a couple of years since Lovina Falls were on our radar and with this `Would That It Were` extended play, they are certainly back with a bang.
