REVIEW: LESS THAN JAKE – UNCHARTED (2024)

Published:

There ain’t nothing like Less Than Jake. Their sound is pure joy wrapped up in ska-punk energy, and it’s nearly impossible to listen without cracking a smile. Uncharted feels like a testament to their ability to keep that spirit alive. Right from the start, “Broken Words” is catchy as hell, with Chris DeMakes singing that things “get all fucked up instead”—yet, like any great Less Than Jake song, the music never does.

The EP brings together some of their latest singles, each track pulsing with the unmistakable LTJ vibe. “Walking Pipebomb” storms in with that pogo-worthy energy, and if you thought you knew what to expect, “Not My Problem” cranks things up just a bit more, showing the band’s range even within their classic style.

Then there’s “Brand New Day,” which is bouncier than a three-year-old on Christmas morning. The song doesn’t waste a moment before it dives into the issues of our era, delivering a “crash course in a serious problem” as it confronts the mess that is 2024. It’s both fun and a bit of a reality check—typical LTJ, really, blending the light and heavy in one tight track.

With “Sunny Side,” LTJ give a nod to their rock influences. According to DeMakes and Lima, the opening riff has been in their pocket “forever,” and the song’s “stadium rock” homage makes it the EP’s standout. The whole collection is top-notch, but “Sunny Side” is a perfect example of the band’s effortless style and enduring energy. Meanwhile, “Dead Days (Over and Over)” brings a seaside vibe with its Hammond organ, adding yet another fun texture to the mix.

Finally, the closing track “Shake Loose the Truth” proves that Less Than Jake still know how to craft the perfect three-minute pop song. It’s quick, punchy, and memorable—just what you’d want from one of ska-punk’s most reliable bands. Sure, they’re not really breaking new ground here, but Uncharted doesn’t hide its treasures—it lays them out proudly, ready for anyone willing to dive in.
